On the lighter side..........?

Outrageous and unusual employment news!

A report by the Department of Health has called for NHS staff to lose weight and set a good example. Of 1.2 million NHS workers, 300,000 were reported as being "obese" whilst another 400,000 were classed as "overweight". (How do they obtain this info???). Particular targets for exercise and dietary programmes will be those involved in healthy living campaigns, such as Maternity staff, midwives, health visitors and school nurses.

A Spanish electrician has been awarded compensation after being called "Manuel"; nicknamed by colleagues after the hapless waiter from television's "Fawlty Towers". Juan Ignacio, from Barcelona (just like Manuel!) was taunted by colleagues whilst working at a London hospital.

Police Officers in the UK, who are practicing Pagans, are being given special leave arrangements for Summer Solstice and Halloween, according to reports in Police Review magazine. A Pagan Police Association has been set up, and has 500 members across the UK police authorities.

The local government of the Indian city of Delhi has recently discovered that it is paying a salary to over 22,800 "workers" who do not exist! (BBC). New, biometric, attendance measures were introduced, which identified the extent of the fraud. Action is now being taken against the officials involved in creating these "ghost" workers. The City employs over 100,000 cleaners, gardeners and other workers.

In 2009, an Austrian insurance company advertised for sales and management staff, but only those with certain star signs. Apparently, people born under the signs of Capricorn, Taurus, Aquarius, Aries and Leo make the best workers in the sector.
The Austrian anti-discrimination authority investigated the advertisement but concluded that "It does appear like a certain limitation, but it is not discrimination".
